The idea of mowing, Smith said, is to prevent the weeds and grass from going to seed and to encourage succulent new growth of the grasses. Permanent pastures should be cut every four to six weeks from now until October, enabling a farmer to'get the most from an acre of pasture. The dried up clippings, Smith noted, will be eaten by the cattle like hay. It is the responsibility of every landowner, including builders and other people who own land' that is not farmed, to mow weeds and keep them from going to seed, £mith said.
