Which 60 Million
Shall Starve?
A return to organic fanning,
advocated by some environmen
talists, would pose the question,
“Which 60,000,000 Amei leans
should be selected for death by
starvation’” says Earl Butz,
Puidue University lesearch
foundation
Butz, in addressing the Nation
al Agncultural Adveitising and
Marketing Association, described
the current ecological interest
as an “emotional, envuonmental
binge,” and referred to Ameri
cans “over-ieaction” to ecological
subjects as “faddism ” He told
the group that envn onmentalists
are the single greatest threat to
modern agriculture
Butz believes greater emphasis
should be placed on the benefits
of pesticides and herbicides used
by modern agncultuie m the
production of food. Conceding
that they are poisons, he argued
that aspirin is also poisonous
when improperly used The
greatest challenge to agriculture
is to feed a world population
which is expected to double by
the year 2,000, Butz said
