There were approximately 70 guests and members present. Special guests at the Twin Valley FFA were Mahlon Kurtz, Joe Beiler, and Robert Stickles, all currently on the Twin Val ley School Board. Mr. Eberts, superintendent of Twin Valley High School, and Robert Moy er, assistant principal of Twin Valley High School, were also present. The banquet was opened by the officers using the official FFA Opening Ceremony. During the program in the lecture hall, Fred Mast gave a short introduction, followed by Ronald Frederick, who made the presentation of awards, in cluding- Terry Murray, chapter Star Greenhand; Fred Mast, chapter Star Farmer; Ronald Nye, poul try farming award; Jerry Jack son, agricultural mechanics. Five students recognized for crop farming were Fred Mast, Jerry Jackson. Robert Hornberger, Robert McGowan and Frank Stoltzfus. Three recognized in livestock farming were Frank Stoltzfus, Robert McGowan and Richard Kurtz. Dairy farming awards went to Fred Mast and Nevin Mast, while placement in agriculture awards went to Thomas Beiler and Jim Stoltzfus. The Honorary Degree was presented to Mrs. Fannie Frey, manager of the Twin Valley High School cafeteria, and to the Birdsboro Dispatch, a local newspaper, along with the Certificate of Appreciation which went to John Abrams, director of food service at Twin Valley High School, and Mrs Cecile Reinbold, teacher of home economics. Richard Kurtz, Chapter re porter, then presented the film, “The Four Star Farmers of America.” The film tells about Joe Spen cer of Oklahoma, who has prov ed his ability as a breeder of Polled Hereford cattle by pro ducing calves weighing 517 pounds at weaning time, year old bulls weighing 950 pounds and a 92 per cent calf crop. Using recommended conserva tion practices and irrigation, he has doubled the value of the 160-acre farm he owns. Runners-up include dairy farmers, Duane Ruess, Michi gan, Central Region, and Jack Gibbons, New York, Atlantic Region. The third, Star Farm er of the Pacific Region, Mike Oakley of Oregon, is a crops man. He raises sweet corn and strawberries, sugar beets and cabbage for seed purposes, and peppermint for mint oil.
