—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 13,1971 26 Plant Pathologist Warns of Blight The nation faces another epi demic of Southern Leaf Blight of corn if the country’s seed corn industry continues its shift to presumably resistant male stenle cytoplasm, according to a plant pathologist at Pennsyl vania State University. Dr. Richard R. Nelson said Penn State tests show that corn inbred lines with C and S male-sterile cytoplasm soon to be used widely in producing hybrids have no resistance to strains of the leaf blight fungus currently existing in the U S. and throughout the world. The shift to C and S male sterile hybrids has started, ha said, because of the extreme susceptibility of corn hybrids to Texas (T) male-sterile cyto- Folks are finding out about Purina’s great sow ration PURINA FARROW CHOW... developed the sow’s n at farrowi Purina Farrowing Chow is the result of five years of testing at the Purina Research Farm Brood Sow Unit. It’s developed to fit the sow’s needs for a palatable, bulky, well-balanced, vitamin-fortified ra tion from a few days before farrowing till about a week after farrowing. This 14% protein ration, containing grain, is fed as the sow’s sole ration. It comes in Checker (pellet) form only, which helps maintain freshness. An nf-180* option to help control scours in baby pigs is available. Purina Farrowing Chow has the “just right” nutrients sows need at this critical time. It’s economical, too. THIS IS THE YEAR to do everything possible to help your sows farrow lots of pigs and wean big litters. Give them the built-in advantages of Purina Farrowing Chow. COME AND GET IT: Purina Farrowing Chow is available at our store right now. Come in and see, feel, smell and taste this product. You’ll like its appearance. Your sows will go for it, too. However, the Penn State tests are the first to reveal the lack of blight resist ance in C and S male-sterile m breds. Seed corn producers develop hybrids with male-sterile cyto plasm the germ plasm in living cells to avoid the need to detassel male plants by hand. Such a procedure saves the seed producer about $6O an acre in labor costs. “Until further research iden tifies the resistance of certain inbred lines of corn with C male sterile cytoplasm, the seed industry should not rush headlong into converting the fro. The Penn State scientist believes that normally produced hybrid corn, using non-male sterile in breds, has sufficient blight re sistance to keep the disease un der reasonable control. “Thus far, none of the fungus strains that blight all of the male-sterile cytoplasms produce a similar blighting on corn lines containing normal cytoplasm,” Dr. Nelson stated. He indicated the seed indus try is increasing production of C-raale sterile inbred corn all over the world. He claimed the seed industry should be alerted to the fact that such inbred corn lines are not resistant to certain races of Southern Leaf Blight fungus. “If the use of hybrid seed with normal inbreds prevents GET MORE FROM EACH MAN!
