Breakthrough Toward Hybrid Soybeans Reported
A male-steule soybean line, a
possible foierunner of hybud
soybeans, has been developed,
reports the U S Department of
Agncultuie.
The soybean line was develop
ed by Dr Charles A Brim, ag
ronomist, his associates of
USDA’s Agricultural Research
Service, and the North Carolina
Agricultural Experiment Sta
tion, Raleigh.

of non-iunctiomng pollen, ac
cording to Dr Brim Thus far,
poor seed set and the lack of
distinguishing physical charac
teristics of the male-sterile
plants before flowering have re
stricted their use.
Although this research de
velopment is a major step in
the development of hybrid soy
beans, the more immediate
value of the sterility system
rests in the increased control
that breeders will be able to
exercise in breeding programs
programs that will allow
many more crosses to be tried.
This prospect should lead to
higher quality soybeans long be
fore hybrids become a practi
cal reality.
D'r. Brim cautions that the
economic importance of hybrid
soybeans remains to be deter
mined, but that the new male
sterile line is the first step to
ward their ultimate evaluation.
Soybeans, which provide the
world with its largest source of
vegetable oil and high-protein
feed, are the number one crop
in cash income to American
farmers the world’s largest
soybean producers. Approxi
mately half of the annual $3
billion US. crop, from 42 mil
lion acres in over 30 States, is
exported.
