lowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michi
gan, Minnesota, New Jersey,
New Mexico, Oklahoma, and
Tennessee All States aie now
enrolled in the campaign to
eradicate hog cholera.
No State remains in the first,
or preparatory, phase; only
three remain in Phase II; and
14 States and Puerto Rico are in
Phase 111.
Pennsylvania entered the
Program in June 1964, moved to
Phase II June 1965, and reach
ed Phase 111 in January 1968.
Dr. Shook and Dr. Mainwar
ing point out that producers can
aid the effort to wipe out hog
cholera in Pennsylvania by re
porting any illness suspicious
of hog cholera to their vetennr
anan at once “Prompt report
ing,” they say, “means that we
can get on top of an outbreak
and stamp it out before it has
a chance to spi ead ”
Indemnities for hog cholera,
they say, should be an aid in
locating and wiping out hog
cholera outbreaks. “By elimina
ting infected hogs in a hurry,
we are helping protect the vast
majority of Pennsylvania pro
ducers who have healthy pigs,”
the veterinarians say.
