Lancaster Co. Farmers Assn. Launches Membership Drive
Chester Heim, Pennsylvania
formers Association legislative
director, was the speaker at the
Lancaster County Farmers As
sociation membership drive
kick-off at Witmer Fire Hall
Monday night.
Heim said that “living inde
pendently is a luxury we (farm
ers) can no longer afford ” He
said that'farmers must organize
to protect farmers’ interests.
He added that he thinks most
farmers today are coming to
realize the need to organize and
are ready to listen to appeals
from the Farmers Association
He emphasized the need for
farmers to have their own or
ganizations, rather than de
pend on other types of organi
sations to piotect their inter
ests He stated that “others can
do it, but they will do it to you
Instead of for you.”
He also emphasized the vol
untary concept of the Farmers
Association and said this is im
portant in keeping the organi
zation working for the best
Interests of the farmers, be
cause the farmer can readily
get into or out of the organiza

In discussing particular prob

emphasized land assessment for

Kreider, local membership campaign chairman; Ches
ter Heim, Pennsylvania Farmers Association legisla
tive director, and Eugene McDowell, regional organiza
tion director.
cxal, who was not named, re
cently said the country can
grow all the food it needs in the
West. “This is true,” Heim said,
“but Pennsylvania can’t afford
to lose the economic value of its
farming.”
He continued, “If we’re going
to keep Pennsylvania growing
economically, we’re going to
have to keep agriculture strong
in Pennsylvania.”
He said that four, out' qf 10
jobs in Pennsylvania are related
-to farming. He also noted'that
Pennsylvania agriculture is a
$1,000,000,000 industry and that
no state can afford to lose such
a large part of its economy.
Looking ahead, he projected
that the budget will again be
the biggest issue in Pennsylvan
ia this year.
He also said that much of
the harm which is being done
or could be done to farm
ing through legislation is not
deliberate. It’s just that “people
don’t understand your business
and this is why farmers need to
present their views ”
In other comments Heim
said the things that motivate
people are “the things that you
can do to help them in their
own lives.” He urged members
to sell the organization on its
past accomplishments as well as
what it can do in the future He
outlined some of the many ser
vices provided by the Farmers
Association and said the organi
zation has “a fantastic history”
in just 20 years of existence.
Also speaking at the meeting
were James G Kreider, Lan
caster County Farmers Asso
ciation piesident, Eugene Mc-
Dowell, regional organization
director, and Leon Kreider, lo
cal membership campaign
chairman.
