Young Cathy Stevens Is a Returning Farm Show Veteran

The fifty-fifth annual Penn
sylvania State Farm Show in
'Harrisburg will see many in
dividuals from Lancaster Coun
ty exhibiting not only all kinds
of farm products and livestock,
but also all kinds of entries in
ithe Home Economics Depart
ment.
This is the show of shows in
the state and only the very best
is shown there
Small wonder that this show
draws so ...many thousands of
visitors to view it
It offers fine entertainment m

day, Wednesday and Thursday

Farm Women’s and FHA meet

There are three classes in
foods and clothing, namely open
classes, 4-H and schools And
In home related arts there is an
open class and a school class.
{Foods include canned fruits,
vegetables and meats, jellies,
baked goods and dried fruits and
vegetables. Clothing includes
dresses, tailored suits and coats,
ensembles, jumpers, skirts,
blouses, etc. Home Related Arts
includes textile accessories, rugs,
wooden crafts, stitchery etc
Anyone interested in entering
exhibits should refer to the
Farm Show premium catalog or
consult the Lancaster County Ex
tension Service Home Economist
who has always cooperated in
getting small exhibits delivered.
The schools likewise get school
exhibits taken to the show.
One young lady in the county
Who is planning to take food and
clothing is Miss Cathy Stevens
oi 1909 Split Rock Drive in the
Landis Farms Development.
She is a very talented seamstress
and a good cook.
She plans to take an exhibit
of cookie bars. This entry re
quires five kinds. This is the
fourth year she exhibited cookie
bars. In 1968 she placed third,
in 1969 she placed second and
last year won first prize on them
This year she hopes to exhibit
a blouse and a skirt; an ensem
ble of a yellow flowered blouse,
floor length skirt and a sleeve
less bolero; an evening gown;
and an ensemble of pants, skirt,
midi vest and a turtle neck knit
tunic top.
Cathy is a Senior and is en
rolled in the College Prepara
tory course at Manheim Town
ship High School, taking home
economics, English, refresher
math, Algebra II and home and
family living.
She has applied at three col
leges for next year. She wants
to take home economics and is
interested either in foods or
teaching sewing.
She has had Home Economics
every year in senior high school
and this is her fourth year in
sewing She also wants to take
an evening Extension sewing
class at the Farm and Home Cen
ter this winter.
She placed fifth in the York
District of the “Make It Your
self With Wool” contest spon
sored by the National Wool
Council.
In home ec I the students get
home furnishings, cooking, nu
trition and sewing.
In home ec II they get a half
year of sewing and a half year
of cooking. In this they get
foreign cookery, canning, salads,
desserts and make a meal.
This year Cathy is in home ec
111 and has a class in home ec
every day. They get a half year
of sewing, child care, anything
specific about cooking like plan
ning a big dinner party.
At the beginning of the year
each girl can make a request of
something she would hke to get
in the course.
Mrs. Elsie Zug is Cathy’s
teacher. There are also two
other home ec teachers in the
school.
The school does not urge the
girls to take entries to the Farm
Show nor spend time in prepara
tion, but will eliminate entries
and see that they get to the
Farm Show.
Cathy says she doesn’t look at
the Farm Show catalog so it
doesn’t influence what she
makes. She takes to school what
she would like to enter and if
there is a class for it the school

the Farm Show one day this
year.
Probably one reason Manheim
Township School has a lot of
entries is because anyone ex
hibiting at the Farm Show is
given a day of legal absence
from school. Any student can
go to the Farm Show, but it
h counted as an illegal absence
if you do not have something
exhibited.
Cathy not only sews for her
self but for her three sisters,
her mother and girl friends at
school. She also loves to make
cookies and to cook and often
has dinner ready when her
mother returns from work She
likes to try out new recipes
This attractive five foot six
and a half inches tall, brown
eyed brunette is active in many
things at school. She likes to
go to school plays, wrestling
matches and basketball games.
She enjoys all sports She is
on the gymnastics team and prac-

tices every day, some days right
alter school and. other days late r
in the evening. There' are eight
schools in competition in 'gym
nastics, counting Manhleim
Township, and they compete
once against each team, then
there are two city-county meets
each year.
She was in the Powder Puff
football game the Saturday after
Thanksgiving at school. This is
touch football. The Sophomores
beat both the Seniors* and the
Juniors
The Stevens family has a
membership at Conestoga Coun
try Club, so all the family ex
cept Mrs. Stevens and a sister,
Linda, play golf. Cathy does
very well in this sport.
She takes after her father
playing golf and also skiing. She
has taken some skiing lessons.
She has skied at Round Top in
York County and at Big Bould
er and Camelback in the Po
conos. She also wants to go to
Elk Mountain and Denton Hill.
Cathy likes to ice skate and
loves to water ski at the bay.
She’s in aquatics (advanced
swimming) gets senior
lifesaving and junior instruc
tors in this. She is interested
in horseback riding and is going
to learn to ride this spring.
Cathy was a Girl Scout for
eight years .She was a member
of Troop 249 which meets at
Highland Presbyterian Church
every Thursday evening.
She is interested in all kinds of

eight week course in modern
