Dr. Frederick Angell, of the
University of Maryland Horti
culture Department, said the
tomatoes giown on the eastern
shore were piocessed largely as
whole pack (canned) tomatoes.
Eastein shore processors gradu
ally shifted to packing tomato
pioducts, reflecting increased
consumer demands and the rise
in convenience foods which con
tain tomatoes
Now, says, Dr Angell, there
is a slowly developing market
for whole Italian tomatoes
which grow extiemely well in
the sandy soil of the eastern
shore area He is also breeding
a variety which has no core and
is suitable foi packing as a
whole tomato
