Food Assistance Added For Five Million in Year Nourishing food has been pro vided to more Americans this year than at any time in history, Secretary of Agriculture Clif ford M Hardin stated in a Thanksgiving message. Food assistance programs serve more than 12 million of the Nation’s poverty victims, a gam of five million since last Thanksgiving, Secretary Hardin said, and child feeding pro grams now reach far more schools and related institutions America’s food supply, “un equaled in abundance and quality anywhere on earth,” has expanded 20 per cent in the past decade and makes it possi ble for the Nation to “share with those less fortunate the vast bounty from farms, fields and ranches,” the Secretary said. “But while benefiting from the farmer’s output, we should strive to raise the economic level of the farmer to that of his fellow citizens in other walks of life,” Secretary Hard in said He expressed the opin ion that the new farm law just passed by Congress marks steps in that direction by moving to ward market-oriented produc tion and expanded exports.
