. Curtailed demand in view of
no slaughtering Thanksgiving
Day appeared to be a factor con
tributing to the price declines in
both slaughter steers and heifers
also the sharp price downturns
in high choice and prime slaugh
ter steers resulted as the eastern
demand for such kinds was re
duced sharply. Some east coast
packers bought very sparingly
in anticipation of a strike by
their employees when their
labor contracts expire at the end
tdf-the -month.
Receipts 77 per cent slaughter
steers, 20 per cent heifer, bal
ance mainly cows. Overall finish
of slaughter steers the same as
last week with 14 per cent prime
and 78 per cent choice This
compares with 17 per cent prime
and 73 per cent choice last year
Average cost and weight of
slaughter steers, estimated at
29 08 and 1172 lbs last year
1160 lbs, compared with 28 30
and 1175 lbs last week, and
28 08 and 1172 lbs last year
Heifer supply mainly high good
to low prime weighing 850-1100
lbs.
