No Tillage is
nothing without
a good winter
cover crop.
Estaohshing a v'go'-ous inter cover crop each fall is a Kev
actor ir turning out too vie'ds in a no tillage program This
s true even if last year s croo ’ ras planted in a perennial see.
A mulch lasts only one season so a freshlv killed cover
is necessary each spring
The heavier the mulch the more moisture it will trao for
foots to tap next sumne r It 1! also keen soil erosion and
surface evaporahon oi moisture at a minimum There are four
things to look for when choosing a winter cover crop
(1) Ease of establishment, (2) Winter hardiness (3) Ease of kilhng
with a herbicide (4) Persistence of dead mulch (Check
with your seed suopher or soil conservation service for inform
ation on cover crops recommended for your area )
Once your cover croc is established heep in mind that it
doesn t pay to graze or harvest it for hay or silage
Stubble left after harvest won't orovide enough protective mulch
In one university test for example corn planted into a vigorous
sod yielded 47% more than corn
planted into stubble ***
Why are we telling you all th
Because we want you to know
everything about no tillage lamin'
And that's why we also want you
to use the best product you
can to give quick kill and fast knO'
down of any cover crop
