With children going back to
school, mothers need to check
out the eating habits of then
children to be sure they are
well nourished Getting all the
right kinds of food is important
all year ’round, of course, but
meals may be more flexible in
the summer time
That sound nutrition is a cog
in mental and physical growth
and development is strongly in
dicated by research However,
not everyone needs to stud> all
the research to know what foods
children need for good health
Parents who use the “Daily
Food Guide” in choosing foods
can be sure they serve their
children what the> need This
guide provides tor the foods
that contain the key nutrients
needed for growth and repair
of the body.
Studies show that many chil
dren are poorly nourished and
thus perform poorly at play and
in school. Students who have
an adequate breakfast also dc
better in mental and physical
activities than those who eat a
poor breakfast or none at all
“The Daily Food Guide” is a
very helpful leaflet for those
who plan the meals for the
family. A copy of the leaflet is
free upon request from the Ex
tension home economist.

A new U S Department of
Agriculture bulletin, designed
for fhe homemaker who likes
va.iety in meals, tells how to
use a food that is both tasty and
nututious
reg. SlO.BO
Nuts which double as a cook
ing mgiedient and as a garnish
snack, 01 appetizei, contribute
rich flavor and crunchy textiue
to many combinations
, Home economists in USDA’s
Agiicultmal Research Service
who piepaied the new bulletin
and developed the recipes, say
nuts can be used as an added
, source of protein and food
eneigy in the diet Most com
j mon nuts contain about 10 to 25
' per cent protein and between
45 and 70 per cent fat
j “Nuts in Family Meals. A
Guide for Consumers” tells how
nuts are marketed, their cost,
the forms to buy, and how r to
distinguish good quality There
is information on storing and
prepaung the nuts for use.
The latest in USDA’s “family
meals” senes gives a wide vai
lety of recipes for main dishes,
salads, soups, breads, desserts,
sauces, and othei nut favorites.
Theie are also serving sugges
tions along with ideas for trans
forming familial recipes into
“company fare ” All recipes give
the number of calories for a
specified amount of food and in
some cases a variation having a
lower calorie value is included
