Lancaster Farming, Saturday. August 15.1970
can led out by the College of
Agriculture
Each of the 120 juniors and
20 adults fiom 22 slates played
a "computer cow selection
game" developed at lowa Stale
University Fiom a make be
lieve herd of 50 cows and 5
bulls assigned to each student,
a computer calculated the
changes possible in weaning
and yearling weights, yearling
confoimation score, and post
wearning daily weight through
12 years of beef cattle selection.
At the start, the participants
selected cows, heifer calves, ma
ture bulls, and replacement bull
calves The selections were bas
ed on any one of the above per
formance traits.
Some of the participants were
able to increase the average
yearling weights by 15 per cent.
This demonstrated the breeding
progress that can be achieved
through careful use of beef per
formance recoids, according to
Lowell L. Wilson of the De
partment of Animal Science at
Penn State.
Each of the different traits
were assumed to have a "hent
ability estimate” derived from
actual breeding research trials.
This hentabihty estimate for
a certain trait represents the
percentage of measured dif
ferences that are caused by
genetic factors within a group
of animals.
“Traits which are highly
heritable, such as yearling
; weight, usually can be improv
ed more rapidly than traits of
moderate or low hentability,
such as weaning weight or re
productive eficiency,” Dr. Wil
son stated.
He felt the computer exercise
at Penn State emphasized the
importance of paying close at
tention to performance records
if genetic improvement is to be
made within a herd or breed.
Personnel of the American-
International Charolais Asso
ciation assisted Dr. Wilson and
Lester A. Burdette and Hugo
Varela-Aivarez 01 the Penn
State animal science staff in
conducting the computer cow
program.
Impressed with the program,
the animal science staff will use
the technique in future youth
work and breeder events both
on and off the campus.

Put on Hog Quarantine
A portion of southwestern
Prince George’s County and the
northern half of Charles County,
Md, have been put under a hog
cholera quarantine by the State
Board of Agriculture (SBA)
The action was taken on dis
coveiy of a case of the highly
virulent swine disease in a small
herd of 12 pigs neai Waldorf.
The pigs were destroyed and
buried immediately to prevent
any spread of the disease.
SBA Animal Health Depart
ment officials say the case ap
pears to be an isolated incident,
and theie is “no reason, at this
time, to believe that it will be
come an outbreak.”
