Chester County 4-H Contests
Held at Brandywine Grange
The annual Chester County 4 H
Demonstration and Public Speak
ing Contest was held July 1 at
the Brandywine Giange Mem
bers were divided into two divi
sions based on age The junior
division consisted of members
between the ages 9 thru 14 and
the senior division consisting of
members over 14
The top three demonstrations
in the junior division were pre
sented by Wendy Thompson,
“Parts of a Flower.” Rosalie
Mayer. “French Dressing” and
Rod Thompson, “Wicks and
Wax," all from Downmgtown.
These members were eligible to
compete at the Regional Contest
at the Owen J Roberts High
School July 15
Also eligible to compete in the
Regional contest from the senior
division were: Cindy Tompkins,
Kennett Squaie, “A Wacky
Cake”; Ann Minshall “Let’s Have
a Party” and Bob Minshall, “The
Camera Does Not Lie”, both of
Kaolin; Marjorie Pyle, “Salads
and Science Go Hand in Hand,
and Debbie Roens, “Drug Abuse
in the Horse World”, both of

subject “Conservation (Our Role
in Public Affairs).” She was also
eligible for Regional competition.

Melanie McCartney, Jean Abel,
all from Phoemxville, and Pat
Yarnall, Oxford Kay Minshall
and Dot Mmshall of Kaolin par
ticipated in the junior division
public speaking contest.
Winners at the Regional con
test will be eligible to participate
in the state contest on August
11 at the University. This 4-H
activity is sponsored by the Co
opeiative Extension Service of
Chester County and The Penn
sylvania State University.

Lancaster County Soil and
Water Conservation District will
compete in the 24th ii.munl Good
year Soil Conservation Awaids
Program to select the nation’s
top 53 conservation districts, ac
cording to Aaron Sander, Eph
rata, disti ict chairman
The district’s activities and
accomplishments will be mea
sured against the performances
of other districts in the state in
determining the first and second
place winners in the annual com
petition sponsored by The Good
year Tire & Rubber Company.
An independent judging com
mittee of agricultural leaders
will select the state winners for
the calendar year 1970.
Grand award for the first place
district will be expense-paid, va
cation-study trips to Arizona for
the outstanding landowner-coop
erator and one member of the
district’s governing board. They
will be guests, along with repre
sentatives of the winning dis
tricts in other states, at the
10,000-acre Goodyear Farms and

ber, 1971.
