There are several points to
observe in order to assure ac
curacy of a grain moisture test'
(a) Get a truly representative
grain sample.
(b) Place sample in a mois
ture-proof container until it is
tested
(c) In sampling grain from a
dryer, take several samples
from different sections of the
dryer and mix together. Cool
sample before testing
(d) In sampling stored grain,
probe into center of grain mass
and take sample from near both
bottom and top.
(e) Weigh samples very pre
cisely, if weighing is requii ed.
Electric moisture testers arc
the most common type for on
faim use because they test ac
curately, quickly and direct!}
This type of tester does not re
quire oven-drying and may or
may not require precise weigh
ing. It registers moisture con
tent of the grain sample by
measuring certain electrical
properties of the grain.
Electrical conductance or ca
pacitance of grain varies de
pending upon grain moisture
content. This variance can be
related directly to grain mois
ture content and read on a
scale.
Moisture testers will vary in
accuracy and costs according to
Ballots on Milk
Merger Mailed
Ballots for voting on a new
base-excess milk marketing
plan were mailed this week to
Lancaster County dairymen
and others in three federal milk
marketing orders.
Voting on the new 12-month’s
plan is part of a two-section
vote on the new Middle Atlan
tic Marketing area federal or
der issued May 18.
The new order merges the
three federal orders now regu
lating milk markets in Balti
more, Philadelphia and Wash
ington D.C. All producers mar
keting milk under the three
orders will receive ballots.
Ballots are expected to ar
rive by June 1, and voting is
expected to be completed by
June 6.
A two-thirds vote of the pro
ducers voting will put the new
base-excess plan into effect in
the fall.
If two-thirds of the produc
ers voting fail to approve the
base plan, then all producers
will be paid on a 'blend price
basis throughout the year.
There would be no base plan.
