Environmental Control
Predicted for Broilers
The only successful broiler
glowing operation in the near
future will be one based on com
plete environmental control, pre
dicted R.C. (Bob) Evans, a sys
tems engineer with Chore-Time
Equipment, Milford, Ind„ at a
lecent meeting of breeder firms
at North Carolina State Univer
sity.
Total conditioning of air is
needed, he said, to meet the “op
timum requirements” of the bird
and minimize stress caused by
such factors as lack of oxygen,
excess humidity, and excess heat
Seven systems that must opei
ate In hai mony if an animal pro
duction entei prise is to succeed,
Evans said, are genetic potential,
buildings, feed and watei, envir
onmental conti 01, waste removal,
money and maiketing
In a tightly closed poultry
house, the speaker said, vauous
gases fiom layers with ammonia
using to the top, air in the mid
dle, and carbon dioxide concen
tiated at the bottom where the
buds aie It is very impoitant,
he said, to stir the an in any
closed building to prevent this
leveling effect
‘lf you can smell ammonia
fumes in a poultiy house,” Evans
said, “theie aie harmful quanti
ties ot caibon dioxide in the low
er an layeis of the house.”
The “pei feet” broiler house
based on present engineering
knowledge, Evans said, is 40
feet wide with a flat ceiling, with
insulation “R” values of 15 to
25 in the ceiling and 10 to 15 in
the side walls The ventilation
system should have the capacity
to move one to 15 cubic feet of
an pei minute (cfm) per bioiler
Di J Ray Harris, NCSU exten
sion vetennanan, said bi oiler
men must adopt successful litter
management systems or they will
be laising buds in vutual cess
pools in the futuie
