Dr, Schrader’s paper presents a unique concept of computeriz ed egg trading. The proposed plan would, according to the author, automate much of the clerical work in buying and sell ing eggs. This would in turn “improve the level of knowledge of the entire industry and reduce the possibility of misleading the currently less informal partici pant. With the improved infor mation, small firms would share some of the advantages that now accrue to large firms because of their size. “Physical efficiency would be promoted through elimination of unnecessary cross hauling and through quality improvement be cause of timely action. Transpor tation costs may be lowered as a result of providing a market for egg transportation services ” Ph. 464-2746 FEED PURINA DAIRY CONDITIONER John J. Hess, 11, Inc. Ph- 442 4632 ' Paradise For good production next lactation, As a dairyman, you know that good milk production doesn’t just happen. It’s something you plan for by establishing a herd with the genetic potential for good production, then managing and feeding your cows so they’ll produce up to their bred-in ability. Many successful local dairymen also plan for good pro duction with a proven program of dry cow feeding. They need Purina Dairy Conditioner, a research proven ration to help give dry cows body condition they need for good production after they freshen. Purina Dairy Conditioner is an extra-palatable 12% percent protein ration. It’s fortified with vitamins A and D plus extra phosphorus to help guard against milk fever. Purina Dairy Conditioner is low-cost, too, because the amounts you feed depend on your cows’ condition and on the quality of the roughages you feed For example, a cow dried off in good condition being fed high-quality roughages would require less Dairy Conditioner than a cow in only fair condition being fed fair quality roughages. Drop in soon and get your free copy of the Purina Dry Cow Program folder We’ll be glad to show you how Purina Dairy Conditioner can help you prepare your diy cows for good pro duction next lactation. D. 3, Ephrata Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 28,1970 Protect Flowers From Cold Snap Spring flowers are anxious to start blooming, but a cold snap might take some of the bloom off if they grow too much too soon. Early warm periods tend to stimulate tulips, narcissus and hyacinth into active growth be fore the danger of frost is past, says Dr. Francis R Gouin, Uni versity of Maryland extension horticulturist. If not protected, tins new growth can be damaged by late frosts. This is not true for Ira. B. Landis Ph; 394-7912 1912 Creek Hill Rd., Lane, James High & Sons Ph; 354-0301 Gordonville Wenger's Feed Mill Inc. Ph; 367-1195 Rheems snowdrops .winter aconites and crocus, however. If the weatherman comes out with a hard frost warning af ter your tulips, narcissus or hya cinths have started to grow, cover them with a loose mulch ing material such as tanbark, fir bark, straw, pine needles or even peat moss. As you are applying the mulch, look for bulbs that have been “heaved” out of the ground by freezing and thawing. Gently push these bulbs back into the soil so that their roots won’t dry out After the danger of frost is past, Dr Gouin says, you can remove the mulch or leave it. Whatever mulch you use will act as an insulator to protect the tender shoots from freezing and thawing. These are yearly problems you can avoid by applying a good mulch in your garden this fall after growth stops.
