If you’re not among the many good local
dairymen who have started mixing
Punna Dairy Conditioner Special with
your own gram to build a research
proved dry cow ration, it can pay you to
check into this low-cost way of feeding
diy cows.
Purina Dairy Conditioner is a 16 percent
protein ration, fortified with extia Vita
mins A and D plus phosphorus to help
guard against milk fever.
To help you save on dry cow feeding,
Purina Research recommends varying
feeding levels, depending on cow condi
tion and the quality of your roughages
For example, if a cow is in good condi
tion and your roughages are of excellent
quality, you would feed less Purina diy
cow lation than if the cow weie in only
fair condition and if the loughages were
of only fan quality.

icpeatedly said more research
needs to be done on swine in
general and sow feeding in pai
licular.
“We know we’re overfeeding
in energy,” he said, “We may be
overfeeding in other things, in
cluding protein.”
Farmers generally are ovei
feedmg corn to make up for de
ficiencies in corn of three paiti
cular ammo acids, including
lysine, he said.
Research Needed
But he added that more re
search is needed to determine
just what to do about the prob
lem.
Younkin described research
which shows that sows can be
successfully fed every third day
“It sounds unhumamtarian, but
it works ”
He said the third day feed
ing system is a real boon in
feed saving, and studies show
that sows have healthier litters,
lay on less of the pigs and have
less mastitis problems
The group fed every three
days was the quietest and they
had just as good a farrowing
record as sows fed every day
The sows fed every day clamor
ed to be fed every time anyone
approached, but the three-day
gioup was quiet, he said
In questioning his Lancaster
County audience, Younkin re
vealed that most local hog

sow with a 15 per cent protein
uitio
One who’s different is Ivan
Ghck of Lampeter, who said he
doesn’t feed any protein or
vitamin supplement.
“If there’s grass to eat, I don’t
feed them anything,” Click
said After they’re 100 pounds, I
put them on clover ”
This apparently surprised
Younkin and other area hog
men, who questioned if Click
could get - good results from
such a program
Click assured them he has
been getting good results for
several years During the ques
tioning, he said, “I always
figure something bad should
happen but it never does ”
Two Dozen Sows
He said he now has about two
dozen sows His litters average
eight to nine, he said
Younkin explained that re
search shows that sows which
don’t get a proper diet often are
able to draw on their body re
sources to produce one good
litter, but then have small lit
ters or none at all after that.
Click said he has not run into
difficulties under his feeding
program. But he said he only
raises two to four litters, then
sells the sows when prices are
good in the summer
Covering a wide range of sub
jects, Younkin advised the use
of intrazme or atgard for
Using Purina Cheek-R-Mix' formulas we
can build you a low-cost dry cow ration,
combining Punna Dairy Conditioner
with your grain. Or, if you’re feeding
low-protein roughages, it may pay you
to feed Dairy Conditioner “straight”
just as it comes from the bag
More and more successful area dairymen
are pioving that good dry cow feeding
pays off in extra cow condition and
extra milk production in the next lacta
tion For example, 100 to 200 pounds of
additional body weight at fieshening can
pay off in 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of extra
milk during the lactation.
