What Is PH? The acidity or alkalinity of a soil is expressed by the term PH. The scale ranging from 3 0 (extremely acid) to 9.0 (strong ly alkaline) is found in our soils although the scale runs from I to 14. A soil is considered neutral at PH 7.0. It is alkaline above that point and acid below it The higher the figure the moio alkaline and the lower the fi gure the more acid it is. Too frequently the layman thinks that a pH of 6 0 is just a little more acid than 7 0, but this is not the case. The measure of acidity of a soil at pH 6 0 is 10 times more acid than at pH 7.0 while at 5.0 it is 100 times more ATTENTION HOG PRODUCERS! When It is clearly understood by all farmers that the measure of acidity progress cs logarithmically rather than by the addition of 10 limes for each whole number of vaiiance from neutral (pH 7 0), they will have a belter realization of the impoi lance of liming. The fust appioach to any soil nutnlional problem is to ted the soil and collect the pH as needed by the addition of the recommended amount of lime Unless the acidity pioblem is conected, the fertilizers both those applied and those native to the soil will not react piopeily and pi eduction will be disappointing.
