Rentzel Sales Manager & Auctioneer Phone 764-6412 Winterize Pleasure Horses To Keep Them Healthy College Park, Md., Dec. 18 Now that cold weather has killed most of the parasite eggs in pastures, it’s a good idea to "winterize” your horses to keep them healthy through the win ter, says Dr. Robert Hammond, University of Maryland Exten sion veterinarian. New drugs that are effective in removing bots and other in ternal parasites will pay off in a thriftier horse and better use of feed. Some of the new drugs can be given by injection, by stomach tube, or by mixing with the feed They are i datively safe and very effective, Dr. Hammond adds Contact your piacticing veterinarian for names of drugs and recommend ed methods of treatment. If your horse has not had a tetanus booster in the past year, it is a good idea to have this done now, as well, Dr. Ham mond advises. Tetanus organisms can be found in almost every horse stable; under these conditions, the slightest puncture would could cause lockjaw Tetanus in horses is usually fatal If your Dairy Associations Approve $1,800,000 Advertising Budget “The two-day Annual Fall Board Meeting of the Directors of the American Dairy Associa tion and Dairy Council of New York ended with a budget of $l,- 800,000 being approved for ad vertising, milk promotion pro grams and educational programs within the Federal Older #2 market area”, according to Rob ert S. Turner, Horseheads, Presi dent. In making the announcement, Mr Tuiner said: “Without a doubt the two-day session in Sy racuse was one of the best ever. The three committees Member ship, Publicity and Public Rela tions as well as Promotion & Ed ucation came up with lealistic budgets and planning that should vastly increase the productivity of the advertising, promotional and educational programs dur ing the year 1970 ” One of the featured speakers, Dwight Morris, Siloam Springs, Arkansas, President of Dairy Re seal ch, Inc, a new national or ganization formed to cairy on re search aimed at attaining new uses for present dairy products FEEDER PIG SALE Saturday, January 3, 1970 2 y 2 miles South of Bethel from US 22 and 6 miles North of Myerstown, Pa., along US 501. 400 to 425 40 to 60 lb. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 27,1969 unvaccinatcd horse is injured, an immediate treatment with tetanus antitoxin will offer some protection, but regular an nual vaccination with toxoid is the best insurance, Dr. Ham mond advises. Lice can find a home in the long hair a horse glows in win ter. If your horse is infested with lice he will tend to be rest less and uneasy from the irrita tion. He will be too busy fight ing these insects to be comfoit able. Spraying or washing with a safe pesticide should add much to your horse’s well being. Pay particular attention to the ears, mane and tail, and be suie to rule the insecticide well into the hair. To add to your horse’s health comfort during the winter months, continue a regular grooming schedule even though you may not be using the animal as often as you did in warmer weather. Grooming helps you control parasites, keeps the coat clean and stimu lates the skin, says Dr. Edwin and also developing new dairy products in addition tq the re search comments said: “It is ab solutely essential that dairymen must be organized into much larger cooperatives and vastly fewer in number which between them will control the marketing of the major portion of the Na tion’s raw milk supply run by farmer directors who are willing to work and sacrifice for the ma-. jonty.” The ADA advertising this year will include use of Junior Scho lastic, Senior Scholastic and co-ed magazines to reach the teens, full page advertisements provid ing nutritional milk information in Today’s Health magazine, the use of newspaper, spot radio and spot TV in addition to three NBC specials narrated by Hugh Downs and a new weekly half hour TV show directed to the teens entitled “Something Else" Membership in ADA & DC of NY. includes some 20,000 dany farmers shipping into Federal Order #2 from New York, Penn sylvania and Northern New Jer sey. Don’t neglect the care of your horse’s feet during the winter. Keep the pens clean and dry and pick the feet every few days to remove the dirt and check for problems. If you are not going to be riding much, pull the shoes and trim the feet as often as needed. Remember that a horse is an athlete, Dr. Goodwin advises. Athletes need exercise to keep their muscles in tone If your horse has several acres to run in especially if he is with other horses he will probably get enough exercise But if he does not have an exercise lot, he should be ridden or exercised on a longe line almost every day. A horse that is confined to a small stall during long winter months is likely to develop stable vices such as cribbing, stall weaving or stall walking, Dr. Goodwin adds. 9
