A View From The Governor's Office
By Gov. Raymond P. Snarer
One of the proudest moments
of my life came last week when
I was able to give six outstand
ing Young Pennsylvanians a
voice in making Slate Govern
ment policy affecting then
lives.
Six weeks ago, I received a
report at our Youth Conference
that lesulted from discussions
and work of more than 24,000
young Pennsylvanians
One of its major recommenda
tions was that young people be
appointed to positions in State
Government where they will
have a significant policy making
role.
I agieed with that recom
nendation because I believe
that young people today should
be heard and involved in the
democratic process more than
ever before.
For it is from the youth of
America that we hear the great
est criticism of our free institu
tions. Thus, it is time that they
have an opportunity to see how
it all works; to participate in
ai riving at decisions; and to
seek constructive, not destruc
tive, changes in our society.
With the appointment of
these six outstanding young
Pennsylvanians to the Depart
ment of Public Welfare, who
weie selected fiom thier demon
stiated ability and desire to
serve, we aie moving fiom lip
service to action
These young Pennsylvanians
are being appointed to agencies
of State Government that deal
with such important community
problems as child care, family
service and public assistance
Carol Keegan, of Dunmore,
and Abraham Tyler, of York,
will serve as youth advisors to
