The ownei feels that a con servative estimate of the loss on his 160 cows from decreased production, abortions, veterin ary fees, medicine and unusable milk will be $lO,OOO An IBR outbreak in a dairy herd costs an average of S6O foi every cow in the herd, says Dr Robert Hammond, Extension veterinarian We aie finding cases of IBR on scattered faims all across Maryland, and since this is a vnus disease, no one knows where it will hit next, Dr Ham mond adds “Once the disease is diagnosed in your held it is too late to vaccinate In fact, vac c nation at that time will cause moie losses than it will pi event.” “There is not even a good treatment for the disease,” Dr Hammond explains He recom mends antibiotics to “keep out secondary infections”, but the antibiotics will not conti ol the IBR virus Furthermoi e, many antibio tics may not be used on “meat producing animals” and the milk from treated cows must be dis carded You should consult a veterinarian before treating cat tie with any drug. Since treatment is so difficult, it is best to prevent the disease Isolate any new additions to the herd, or cows that have been to the fair Don’t visit infected heids to see how they look. Dr Hammond cautions A clear watery discharge from the eyes and nose is the first symptom you will notice in an IBR outbreak This will be fol lowed by loss of appetite, loss! forage and silage with ease.
