First Tobacco Cut Thursday On Local Farm
CUT TOBACCO. This field' of tobacco was cut
Thursday morning on the farm of Phares H. Zimmer
man. Ephrata R 3. It had been topped three weeks ago
to the day and MH-30 was used to stop the suckers.
Zimmerman said it was one of the earliest cuttings

4-H Dairy Champions
Named At Two-Day Show
The fust of the two-day 4-H
Show held at the Guernsey Bain
this week, saw four bleed cham
pions and four leseive bleed
champions named Showing and
fitting championships weie also
awarded as well as a group se
lected to go to the District Show
later this fall.
In the Ayrshire breed, Bryon
Smeltz, Elizabethtown, leading
the 1968 winner, Masonic Homes
Flashy Carla, again showed her
to the grand championship Clara
showed as a senior yßailing this
time.
The reserve champion was Ma
sonic Homes Flashy Bliss, shown
by Henery Smetlz, also Eliza
bethtown.
Plowing Contest Reset
The Lancaster County Plow
ing Contest was postponed this
week due to the wet weather.
According to Aaron Stauffer,
Committee Chairman, it has
been rescheduled for Wednes
day, August 6, with another
rain date, if needed, of Friday,
August 8.
The time and place are the
same as previously announced:
Earl Hurst Farm, Route 222
North of Lancaster, starting at
10 a.m.
In the Brown Swiss division,
Linda Sue and Robert Witmer,
Willow Street R 2, had the cham
pions with Robert showing the
champion with Jo-Har Thelma
Nola, a senior yearling and Lin
da the reserve champion with
her junior calf, Jo-Har Miss Mat
tie
The Guernsey show had a pair
of three-year-old cows on top.

showed his Penn Del Brilliant
Connie to the championship and
Marlin Stoltzfus, Ronks Rl. had
the reserve in Wyno Harlequin
Rose.
Thomas Aaron, showed his
two-year-old, Lynmoore’s Epic
Cheer to the grand championship
in the Jersey bleed and Barbara
Jeanne Aaron showed Blossoms
Valov Emeral to the reserve

The fitting awards went to the

day off by winning the grand

Kingpin Maxim.
The show which qualifies en
tries for the State Black and
White Show, lasted only five
hours with judge Obie Snider
placing the huge classes with
good speed.
The blue ribbon winners were:

Hess; Vernon Umble

The Pennsylvania Society of
Farm Women is sponsoring their
first foreign tour according to an
announcement this week by
State president, Mrs W. F. Dum
mer.
Leaving New York Sept. 29
and returning Oct 11, this tour
will include visits to Holland,

and London, and will include
some special points of interest to
ruial people, such as visits to
Model Faims Cheese Factories,
Wineues, in addition to the plac
