24—Lancaster Farming. Saturday. May 10.1969 UJS. Sheep Industry To Act On Deluge Of Lamb Imports In an emergency session in Denver recently, the presidents of the two largest sheep organi zations expiessed alarm at the steady rise in impoits of lamb in recent months into the Unit ed States James L. Powell of Foil Mc- Kavett, Texas, president of the National Wool Growers Asso ciation, and Reed C Culp ot Salt Lake City, Utah, president of the National Lamb Feeders Association, said in a joint statement that there is extreme concern about the imports of lamb which have giown out of all proportion in the first three months of 1969. During the first quarter of 1969 lamb impoi ts were 180 per cent of the same nenod in 1968, while during Mai cli of 1969 they were 292 percent ox March 1968 In addition, lamb producers in the U.S. expect an increased supply of imported fiozen lamb during April. Powell and Culp said the in creased imports of lamb, which is not protected under any im port quota law at present, have been reflected in weakening of domestic lamb puces at whole sale during the last three weeks Some of the important pro cessors of lamb, as well as labor unions, have also expiessed con cern over the rising lamb im ports Powell said the NWGA also objects strenuously to any at tempt to cut tariffs on import ed raw wool “We are absolute ly opposed to any cut m tariff "because of the difference in cost of production between the FREE ROTARY MOWER With Purchase of an INTERNATIONAL® CUB CADET" Lawn & Garden Tractors ||| 5 NEW MODELS 72-7 hp, regular transmission 104- regular transmission 105— lOhp, Hydrostatic Drive 124 12hp, regular transmission 125- Hydrostatic Drive Full line of over 50 work-saving •ttachments. Powell added that the sheep industry is making some giant strides toward improving its production and marketing piac- tices under the Sheep Industry Development Program, but that the imports of lamb can literal ly wreck this plan and with it the domestic sheep industry. Culp supported the NWGA in this action and stated that the time has come for the domestic sheep industry to take appro priate action to save the indus try. “We have just reached a point where we are turning around and progressing rapidly toward an improved and more successful industry. These im ports could very well reverse this trend,” Culp said.
