The onset of the condition has been repoited following wet, cold weathei, implicating a stiess factor Initially, animals may show muscular tiemois localized in the muscles ovei the shouldei and lump These eaily symptoms gradually intensify un til geneialized Convulsions dominate In some cases muscle tiemois are absent and animals will be nervous irritable, and be have in an irrational manner. Animals affected in this manner may attack without provocation. Other comdtions with similar symptoms may appear during this season to make a diagnosis difficult, and other diseases may need to be treated in a manner quite different from grass tetany. A successful preventive measure consists of feeding one ounce of magnesium oxide per head per day in the mineral mix. Recovery in untreated indivi duals is rare. The soil testing service of the Pennsylvania State University is now notify ing farmers and making recom mendations when soil test re sults reveal magnesium de ficiency Correcting soil magnesium levels appears to be the best in surance against magnesium de* ficiency in crops, or animals liv ing off the land Early detection and veterinary assistance will virtually eliminate death losses due to this condition This is the season to beware of gaihc in pastures If you have any doubt that this weed is pre sent be very careful to leave your cows in the pasture for short periods of time, because this weed can cause off flavors (Continued on Page 28) 17
