PRODUCTION OF MILK
UP 2 PERCENT
March 1969 milk production
was 603 million pounds up 2
percent from the 592 million
pounds produced during March
1968 However production con
tinues well below 1967 levels.
Production per cow at 830
pounds was 20 pounds or about
2 percent more than a year ago
but again did not measure up to
pioduction in March 1967 Cow
in the milking herd were esti
mated at 726,000, down about 1
percent from 731,000 a year
earlier.
Precipitation, mostly rain, dur
ing March averaged about one
third below normal This, com
bined with short snowfall last
winter, leaves us with less thajn
usual soil moisture reserves
Moisture is now adequate for
spring growth but more is need
ed for the growing season Tem
peratures averaged a little be
low normal but there was a gen
eral warming trend towaid the
end of the month
