Associate Agricultural Agent
Once again the pasture seasoa
is close at hand Before turning
the bred heifers out this spring
there aie two things you should
consider First, remove any
hoi ns which still may be on the
heifers, it is much wiser to re
move these horns before the
warm weather airives Secondly,
be suie and check all bred heSI
eisfoi piegnancy befoie turning
out to pastUiCS In this way you
can pi event any heifeis w'ho are
not bied toi tieatment as well
a« still observing them foi heat
periods
Since theie is a new state law
or the age limit for Bang’s
vaccination 1 wish to remind
you that all calves aie to be vac
cmated by six months of age
The heifers must be blood tested
at 18 months of age and show a
negative test
When quality of straight grass
forage is average or lower, prd
tein may be a limiting factor.
Too often grass forage may con
tain even less protein than corn
silage which is notoriously low
in this nutrient Grass forage
also is often deficient in mag
nesium and may contain exces
sive amounts of potassium in re
lation to calcium plus magne
sium The ratio of potassium,
to calcium plus magnesium in
the total ration should be in the
range of 1 1 to 2.2 1 Violations
of this ratio may increase the
incidence of milk fever, creep
ing down cow and grass or win
tei tetany A high KCa + Mg
ratio is more apt to occur oa
heavily fertilized forage, es
pecially if large amounts of poul
try manuie have been applied
Do you have trouble with
cows maintaining appetite?
When cows slow down consider
ably in eating or refuse appre
ciable amounts of concentrate,
their concentrate allowance
should be reduced by several
pounds or even cut by one-half
foi a few days to keep appetite
keen Also closely observe cows
foi signs of illness.
Non-specific infections ac
quired by susceptible cows at,
calving time from a contaminat
ed envuonment are today much
moie mipoi tanl causes ot herd
infertility than are specific
diseases 1 eneieal infections, in
cluding v ibnosis and tricho
moniasis, aie earned b> infected
bulls to successive females by
natural service A I service has
successtull> eliminated the dan
gei of these diseases where
herds are bied stuctly by A. I
If the use of a bull to breed
heifers is deemed desirable, be
sine that the animal, if he is
purchased from another herd,
is purchased young enough so
that he could not have infected.
Continue his use solely to virgin
heifers
