Small -grain continues to have
a place on many farms but the
trend is away from winter
wheat and toward winter bar
ley. Wheat prices have been
very unfavorable recently and
the barley fits into more live
stock feeding operations than
the wheat. Wheat planted last
fall dropped 15% from the pre
vious year. Most of this acreage
went into winter barley; this
crop is well adapted to south
eastern counties. Another re
port shows that the seed certi
fication of winter barley went
up 39% in 1968 over a year
earlier; more growers are us
ing barley for winter grain. Of
the amount certified in Penn
sylvania, 85% of it was of the
Pennrad variety. Local grow
ers are with this trend toward
barley and many have recogniz
ed the merits of the Pennrad
variety.
