The livestock population ex
plosion on Pennsylvania farms
was lather slight last year. A
January I inventory of all
species indicated that they in
creased their numbers by only
2 percent for a total of 2,475,000
head However, their value rose
8 percent to $441,451,000.
All cattle and calves totaled
1,799,000 head on Januaiy 1, up
1 percent from the same date in
1968, and valued at $240,966,000.
Hogs and pigs showed the lar
gest increase, a rise of 9 percent
to 506,000. Value was placed at
$17,255,000.
Continuing a long-time down
ward trend, sheep and lamb
numbers declined by 1 percent.
They numbered 170,000, but
showed a value increase of 5
percent to $3,079,000
