- A Registered Holstein cow owned by Paul B. Zimmerman,
Eohiata Rl, completed the highest 305 day lactation in November
according to the latest report of the Red Rose Dairy Herd Im
provement Association of Lancaster County. Rose produced 22,-
225 pounds of milk, 945 pounds of butterfat with a 4 3 percent
t6St Second high lactation was completed by a Registered Hol
stein cow owned by J Eby Hershey, Gordonville Rl Rach An
produced 18,572 pounds of milk, 861 pounds of butterfat with a
4. 6 percent test in 305 days. , ~. ... ,
' The herd of Curtis E. Akers, Quarryville R 2, had the highest
daily butterfat average This herd of 37 2 Registered and Grade
Holstein cows averaged 47 5 pounds of milk, 191 Pounds of but
torfat with a 4.0 percent test. The herd of J. Arthur Rohrer &
Sons, Paradise Rl, placed second This herd of 50 1 Registerd and
Grade Holstein cows averaged 50 6 pounds of milk, 1 90 pounds
of butterfat with a 3 8 percent test.

Vaccinate heifers against Bru
cellosis; if they are between the
ages of 3 and 6 months. Effec
tive January I, 1969, ail vaccin
ated animals (heifers over 18
months of age) must be bled A
sure way to get your herd in'
quarantine is to be careless
! about the age when heifers are
vaccinated. It is better to slci|l

is to vaccinate them at this age*
Treat dry cows which have
had mastitis and 'still showed f
,CMT reaction m the mastitis
quarters just before they are
turned dry. To treat quartern
thoroughly wash and dry the
teat Rub alcohol onto the end
with cotton pledget or gauze
swab. Wipe off treatment tube
with alcohol. Hand strip aH_ se
cretion from the quarter. Inject
the anti-biotic and massage
gland thoroughly. Repeat in twd
weeks if desired

To clean vacuum lines add 1
can (13 ounce) of lye to 5 gal*
lons of hot water. Caution: nev
ei add water to the lye Handle
with care at all times. Starting
with the stall cock nearest the
pump, draw 2 quarts of the
cleaning solution through the
reserve tank and/or sanitary
trap Dram the system com*
pletely and check to see that
low-point drain valves are oper*
atmg Next, rinse the line com*
pletely, drawing at least 2 quarts
of clear, hot water through each,
stall cock as previously done
with the cleaning solution Drain
the system completely and then
dry the line by running the vac
uum pump for at least 30 min
utes with the farthest stall cock
open
