Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 4,1969 — Correspondence Courses ifiL ITUDY HOUSEPLANT AGHT NEEDS Give houseplants all available light in midwinter. Five hours a day is the best you can do even by moving plants from east to west windows with the sun. According to a Pennsylvania State University correspondence course on houseplants, food pro duction goes on only in daylight. 'Growth depends mostly on food supplies. Food making occurs rapidly in bright sun, slows as light diminishes and ceases when darkness comes. Even well-lighted homes are poorly illuminated in compari son to the out-of-doors. An out door garden receives 10,000 foot candles of light at noon on a clear- midsummer day. In a greenhouse, plants may receive 1,000 foot-candles in winter. But in a home it’s unusual to find more than 40 foot-candles ex cept near a window without cur tains and no tree outside to ob struct light. To learn more about the light needs of houseplants, study the Penn State correspondence course. Send your name and ad- Public Sale FRIDAY, JAN. 17, 1969 STARTING AT 10:30 A.
