One of these Jaws is the gen
ei al food law whicn, as the name
implies, coveis a bioad front It
defines food as “not only eveiy
article used for food by man,
but also every article used foi,
or entering into the composition
of, oi intended foi use as an m
giedient in the prepaiation of
food foi man ”
The othei is known as the
sausage law, a title that leflects
the concern of a by-gone eia
with a specific pioduct lather
than the broad range of piod
ucts to which it leally applies
As a mattei of fact, rules and
regulations cover 58 categones
of meat pioducts, from bologna
to wieneis, and include giound
meats and patties of all descrip
tions that are now popular with
the public
The oldest consumer protec
tion laws administered by the
Agriculture Department are the
candy law of 1887 and the vine
gar law of 1891 The newest is
the mandatory meat and poultiy
inspection law of 1968
Other consumer protection
laws of the Department deal
with products such as milk,
eggs, bakery goods, butter, and
beverages other than alcoholic,
drinks Some deal with cold stor
age facilities, milk plants, and
the quality 1 grading of fruits and
vegetables One, dating back to
1915, involves the mixing of
chicory with coffee.
Our consumer protection ser
vices also deal with such prod
ucts as fertilizers, lime, seed,
nursery stock, trees, shrubs and
bushes.
The important point about all
this work is that most of these
services rendered by the State
Depaitment of Agriculture have
been a regular part of our du
ties and responsibilities for half
a century or more These are of
major importance to consumers
even though they lack the popu
lai term “consumer protection”
in the text of laws, rules and
regulations.
