Call For Restraint
In 1969 Turkey Prod.
Representatives of the na
tion’s turkey industry meet
mg in Washington with U.S De
paitment of Agriculture offici
als called for turkey produc
er to hold production in 1969
to the level of 1968
The 26 representatives, a
cross-section of turkey produc
ers and processors met with
officials in USDA’s Consumer
and Marketing Service to dis
cuss preparation of USDA’s
Consumer and Marketing Ser
vice to discuss preparation of
USDA’s 1969 turkey marketing
guide This economic guide is
published annually to give tur
key producers voluntary guide
lines on the year’s production
The group emphasized that an
increase in next year’s produc
tion would result in lower prices
to producers and to many birds
carried over in storage. Thev
recommended to the nation’s
turkey growers that production
next year be maintained at the
1968 level
C&MS poultry officials told
the group that demand for tur
keys in 1969 will be only slight
ly higher than in 1968, in the
face of expected larger supplies
of red meat and broilers Stor
age stocks of turkeys on Jan 1
will also be larger than expect
ed because consumption in the
past few months was below the
level of the past two years
They also pointed out that the
turkey breeder flock will pro
bably be only slightly smaller
Jan 1 than a year earlier But
a considerably smaller breeder
flock (up to 9 percent smaller)
could produce as many poults
next year as in 1968, if the flock
were used to its full potential
The industry group expressed
concern that favorable feed
prices and recent small increase
in turkey prices over low levels
a year earlier might lead grow
ers to produce too many tur
keys They asked USD A to j
bring these facts to the atten-|
tion of the industry as soon as
possible by issuing the 1969 tur-
