Birthday Issue
With this issue, Lancaster
Farming starts it’s fourteenth
year as Lancaster County’s

not see a great change in this
our birthday issue or in subse

each week through the year.
We will still cover all the
farm news as it occurs and
speak editorially for and to
the farmer in whatever way
we believe is for his best in
terest. The only difference
you can notice is the Vol. No.
has advanced to 14.

Cattle feeders all through the
first 9 months of 1968 have
done a good job of marketing
cattle as they reached weight
At seven leading markets, aver
age weight during September
was 15 pounds less than a year
earlier. This was a substantial
price-strengthening factor.
Excessive weights this fall and
winter are still a possibility,
but less likely now that cattle
feeding has become a business
of professionals Many of the
feeders who used to take pride
in“topping” the market can no
longer afford this expensive
hobby.

Good and Bad Hog News
The latest pig crop repoit in
dicates that hog marketings in
the October - December penod
may be a little smallei than last
year Even though nog puces
will decline seasonally fiom cu.-
lent levels, they will probably
ismain above 1967 prices With
hog prices favorable and grain
at low puces, the hog enterpuse
will be profitable thiough the
remainder of 1968
The possible bad news relates
to producers’ intentions to ex
pand the hog business During
the summer, hog pioduceis ex-,
panded farrowings at a moie
rapid pace than they pred.c’sd
last June At that time they in
dicated they would farrow only
2 peicent more pigs (than in
1967) in the June-August period
—but they actually produced 5
percent more They will pro
duce 4 percent more from Sep
temDer-November, compaied to
their earlier intention of 2 per-
