Archery Deer
Season Opens
Today, Sept. 28
Pennsylvania’s 1968-69 sea
sons for big game will get un
derway, when archers begin
hunting whitetail deer on Sat
urday, September 28.
The Keystone State, which
has had unusually large deer
herds for the past several sea
sons, has a whitetail population
this year even larger than that
of 1967.
There will be 24 hunting days
during the regular statewide
archery deer season. The regu
lar archery season closes on

October 25, one day before the
opening of the general small
game season. Sunday hunting is
prohibited.
An extended 15-day archery
deer season is scheduled to be
gin December 26. Use of bow
and arrow is also permitted
during the regular antlered and
antlerless seasons in December.
Hunting hours for bowmen
will be from one-half hour be
fore sunrise until sunset.
Archers are permitted to take
one deer of either sex, regard
less of size. If a hunter bags a
deer during the archery season,
he is not permitted to take an
other whitetail during the regu
lar gunning season.

number of deer taken by bow
men in a single year. During the
1967-68 seasons 110,000 archers
took 3,251 whitetails a record
license sale and harvest.
Game Commission field re
ports indicate that deer arp
plentiful throughout the state,
for hunters to concentrate on
and that it would be desirable
areas where farmers seek relief
from crop damage.
This year’s rainfall has pro
duced rather lush vegetation,
and dense cover reduces visibili
ty. Bowmen should be extra
cautious, and should be sure of
their targets.
