Autumn Is
Add a touch of frost to the air
and Pennsylvania becomes alive
with color ranging from warm
browns to blazing scarlets.
Autumn, reports the Depart
ment of Forests and Water's, is
"Flaming Foliage” time in the
Commonwealth and a time for
thousands of motorists to take
to the road to view this magnifi
cent scene while it is at its
height.
By the end of September, de
pending on weather conditions,
a touch of color will begin ap
pearing, here and there, and by
mid- October Pennsylvania’s
landscape will be cloaked with a
mantle of golden yellows, brilli
ant orange, deep crimson and
soft brown.
This is the time of the year
when the oaks, the birch, ma
ples, elms and beech, even the
lowly sumac, try to outdo one
another with blends of color
which only nature can provide.
Pennsylvania has more kinds
of beautiful leaf colorations in
autumn than any other state in
the nation and of all the species
of native trees in the United
-States, 123 can be found within
the Commonwealth.
Tree leaf coloration occurs at
approximately the same time
each year depending on sunlight,
rainfall and humidity.
Normally it strikes first in the
northern tier counties including
a portion of Wayne and all of
Susquehanna, Bradford, Tioga,
potter and McKean, where the
season of the best tree colora
tion is approximately between
Oct 1 and 14
About mid-October, or approx
imately Oct. 12-26, this colorful
extravaganza spreads southward
into the central zone which
spans the state in a funnel shap
ed band extending from the Po
conos westward to encompass
the entire western portion of the
state from Erie to the Mason-
Dixon line.
Finally, to complete the cycle,
the southern counties take on an
autumnal look about Oct. 19
This southern belt is a triangu
lar shaped area which extends
from Stroudsburg southwest to
the eastern slopes of Laurel Hill,
just west of Somerset
