KNOW YOUR INSECT
FRIENDS AND FOES
Are insects your friends or
enemies? Is an insect entitled to
live, or should be destroyed? Do
you know the good and bad
kinds and how they live and
grow?
According to a Pennsylvania
State University correspondence
course on basic entomology, in
sects are man’s greatest foes.
About one-tenth of all the crops
farmers raise goes to insect
predatoi s Wood chewing insects
damage buildings, and others
spread diseases of plants and an
imals.
But some insects are good.
Without them we’d have no hon
ey, natural silk nor shellac. And
flower-visiting insects pollinate
blossoms, increasing fruit yields.
Begin your insect study by
making a collection The equip
ment cost is low and the insect
supply almost unlimited. Even
in winter some can be found.
Penn State’s correspondence
course is for beginners in en
tomology There are lessons on
identification, classification, life
cycles, control of pests, and
characteristics of certain inter
esting insects. The lessons on
collecting aie well illustrated,
showing the needed equipment
and methods
