600 Attend Dedication Of
Farm And Home Center
Dr. Russell E. Larson, dean of
The College of Agriculture at
Pennsylvania Slate University,
was the featured speaker at the
open house and dedication of the
Lancaster County Farm and
Horae Center last Sunday.
Despite warm, muggy weath
er, the event drew a crowd of
more than GOO to the air-condi
tioned center.
Other speakers on the pro
gram included Mayor Thomas
J. Monaghan; Benjamin F. Wea
ver, chairman of County Com
missioners; B Snavely Garber,
Farm and Home Foundation
president; County Agent M.
Maxwell Smith, and State Sen.
Richard A. Snyder.
Dr. Harry K Gerlach, County
Superintendent of Schools, pre
sided.
Dr. Gerlach acknowledged the
presence of Willis Z Esben
shade. first president" of the
foundation, then introduced the
county agent, saying “When we
speak of agriculture, the first
name that comes to mind is Max
Smith ”
The county agent said- “The
completion of this project is an
accomplishment for all of us.”
Noting that the idea for it was
conceived “over a decade ago,”
Smith said, “It is the first of its
kind and one that will add to the
prestige of the county.”

cluded Thomas H Patton, direc
tor of Extension: Marion Dep
pen, Southeast Extension direc
tor, “Dutch” Bucher, county
agent here from 1913 to 1949;
and retired Associate County
Agent Harry S Sloat

Mary B Howry, who was Mr.
Esbenshade's housekeeper after
his wife’s death, and Helen E
R Shenk, a niece of the bene
factor
