She is conducting the class in the Reading Is Most Important In Second Grade Curriculum As was true in first grade, the importance of readiness cannot be over-emphasized. The degree of readiness determines the time, the way and the amount of nativities that will be taught. A child is only ready for second grade reading after he has mas tered the skills of first grade level reading. He needs to be successful at that level. He needs to be physically and psy chologically ready for second grade, Second grade teachers do not wait passively for this devel opment. They provide readiness experiences for the children, and are ever aware of the child as a BE DETERMINED ... TO MAKE MORE MONEY FROM YOUR COWS! Teachers also con tinue to provide for visual and auditory discrimination, like nesses, and differences. It does not seem possible that after all the teaching of kinder garten and first grade that there are some children who need more teaching on the matter of left to right, top to bottom, front to back, listening for under standing, following directions, and sequence of events. All reading must be developed to the degree and according to the needs ot each pupil. In other subject areas and of- ten in reading the class works together as a unit in the use of pictures, records, films, poetry, creative writing, labeling, ex perience charts, library activi ties, bulletin boards, news, cal endars, letters, cards, trips, dramatizations and games. How ever it should be understood that many skills can best be de veloped in small groups. This allows for refinement and appreciation for the faster mov ing children and for thorough ness for the slower moving. Some of the teachers incorpor ate an individualized reading program as well. Some pupils have been reading all summer. They have been go ing to the library or to Bible School or to Sunday School, Oth ers have not looked at a book or paper since June. The first group is confident of success. The second group has forgotten much. Coming back to school means meeting old book friends and so the second grade teacher gives the children the opportun ity of reading the simple pre primers, primers and first read ers. This establishes a review of the 78 initial prepnmer vocabu lary and 104 primer words and the 206 words of the first reader. It is at this point that teachers test the children individually for word recognition and compre hension Many authorities test on a representative 20 words for each level but most of the sec ond grade teachers feel that the test for preprimer and primer level should be on 100% of the words This is a flash test If the child knows 80 to 85% of the words he needs to review at that level If he knows 75% or less of the words it indicates that he needs instruction at that level. Even though there are other tests given this test is bas ic It is recognized and recom mended by the Lancaster Coun ty Reading Center By Thanksgiving the average second grade has the advanced group working in a second grade reader, a middle group in a first reader and the slow learners in a primer level. There are often one or two pupils who need to go slower and are in a preprimer level. The basic second grade read er is called ALL THROUGH THE YEAR published by Har per & Row. Formal spelling is taught by the weekly unit plan. Our test is GOALS OF SPELLING by McGraw & Hill. Words are pre sented one day. They are anal yzed and used and then on the fifth day the pupils are tested. Much spelling is taught as the skills in reading are developed. Science involves observation, reading and experimentation. Weather and its study of fers opportunities foi the use of scientific processes The Social Studies program is geared to meet the needs of the individual pupil The goal is to have the children learn to live together with a feeling of good will toward others, respect ing others opinions, and respect ing property, both public and private. They should learn control. They need to accepts the responsibility that should be theirs as a citizen of the school, the community, and the country. Some of this is accomplished through the study of commun ity helpers and community ac tivities and organizations An observation and study of holi days gives the children an ap preciation of their heritage The study of current events gives them an awareness and under standing of today’s pro blems and a glimpse of the future. For four to five shoul der lamb chops, mix one-third cup oil, one-third cup soy sauce and one-fourth cup lemon juice.
