Eastern Milk
Co-op Condemns
Hearing Delay
“The postponement of the
filled milk hearing for some 60
days is a complete injustice to
farmers and could cost dairy
men of the New York milkshed
8300,000 if even I','p of the fluid
milk sales are affected.”
In commenting on the nation
al hearings on filled milk and
emergency pricing of Class I
milk being held in Memphis,
Tenn. this past week, John'C
Yoik, general manager of East
ei n Milk Producers Assn, em
phasized that the recess will
only lesult in further losses to
milk producers.
“Because of this unfortunate
delay it is more important than
ever that our proposal for a
S 6 80 Class 1 price be adopted.
“Eastern proposed on Friday
that temporary provisions on
Class I pricing be continued in
all federal ordeis beyond the
scheduled April 30 termination
date We have also proposed
that the Class I emergency price
be established at $6.80 per cwt.
for the New Yoik-New Jersey
Marketing area and the Mass-
R I -New Hampshire area, ex
plained Mr. Yoik.
“Events of the last few mon
ths have pi oven that the three
economic movers which we have
recommended for milk -pricing
formulas are needed now more
than ever to help farm milk
puces meet the inroads of in
flation
“In order to help farm prices
keep pace with ever-rising farm
costs, our proposed pricing
formula contains three econo
mic movers Wholesale Com
modity Price Index, Prices Paid
by Faimeis, and an index re
flecting consumers’ ability to
buy,” emphasized Mr. York.
“It is somewhat ridiculous
that Milk Dealers groups need
even the 60 days they have been
granted to make further study
of the filled milk situation They
have already had several mon
ths to do that very thing and,
of couise, several of them are
actually pioducing filled milk
now
“The farmers in the North
east are being penalized right
in the milk check for this un
warranted delay in getting some
definite decisions on the pricing
and handling of filled milk
“National milk organizations
ai e i esponsible foi much of the
tm moil and unrest which now
exist in the milk industry Such
groups as National Milk Pro
ducers Federation which is
laigely dominated by Mid-west
mtei ests do not favor tailor
ing prices to fit the demand or
economic situation of an in
dividual or legional market
aiea.
“Since nonfat diy milk powd
er or skim milk aie components
of filled milk pioducts, Mid
western groups are deeply anxi
ous to provide the powder for
filled milk products sold in the
Noitheast They want the pric
ing to be such, that it will bene
fit farmers in the Midwest
“Northeastern interests large
ly support the pucmg of the
non fat ingi edients at the Class
I puce level and want this pay
ment made to the maiket where
it is consumed.
“So, here we sit in the middle
of a powei struggle which can’t
be resolved because of a recess
peimitted in the hearing Since
danymen in our area aie direct
ly affected by this delay and in
decision, we are taking the
stand that the filled milk hear
ing must be lesumed earliei
than 60 days ... and as 6 80 per
cwt Class I price be established
light away,” said Mi. York.
