Chickens React
To Temperature
And Humidity
Chickens in a University of
Maryland study reacted to tem
pemture and humidity extremes
much the way people react.
High humidity in the pens did
not bothei them too much when
the temperature was 80 degrees
F or lower, but when the tem
perature and humidity both went
up the chicks lost appetite and
were generally unthrifty look
ing When temperatures went
down drastically, the chicks ate
more feed but gained less weight
because more of the feed energy
went into maintaining body heat
Professors Paul Winn, Agri
cultural Engineering, and Ed
waid Godfrey. Poultry Science,
found that birds in high humidi
ty-high temperature surround
ings suffeied much more stress
than the normal (control) flocks
After the stress period, flocks
were returned to normal condi
tions Most chicks showed rapid
growth gains foi a short period
until they nearly “caught up”
with the control birds
When humidity was lowered in
the high temperature pens, the
birds drank more water but still
did not grow well Low humidity
caused dust accumulation, which
the researchers say might pre
cipitate or aggravate respiratory
diseases
Poultiymen have long recom
mended a 95 degree starting
temperature, but Godfrey and
Winn had their best results when
brooder house temperature was
kept at 90 degrees F (with a
relatn e humidity between 50 and
70%) foi the first three days-of
the chick's life After that they
reduced the temperature as
much as two degiees per day,
but found that the chicks did not
do well if the temperature went
below 65 degrees
Federal Poultry Law
Is Six Months Behind
Penna. Efforts
A proposal to Congress to
strengthen Federal poultry in
spection laws is six months be
hind Pennsylvania’s efforts in
this important area of consum
er protection, Governor Ray
mond P Shafer said recently
A meat inspection bill (H B.
1566) providing for mandatory
inspection of meat and poultry
slaughter and processing plants
in Pennsylvania was mtioduced
in the Legislature last August
2, Governor Shafer pointed out
The bill has been passed by the
House and now is before the
Senate
‘‘Pennsylvania is one of the
few states that has taken this ac
tion,” Governor Shafer added
“I would hope for early final
passage when the Legislature
returns in Maich ”
State Agriculture Secretary
Leland H Bull said Pennsylvan
ia’s position in regard to poultry
inspection is the same as it was
about meat
“We favor a strong, coopera
tive Federal-State progiam for
inspecting both meat and poul
try,” he stated
“In this respect,” he added,
“we are far ahead of most states
and the Federal Government in
efforts to provide this service
foi the public ”
The recently enacted U S
meat inspection law applies
only to red meat and does not
include any foim of poultry,
Secietaiy Bull pointed out
Piesent Fedeial poultiy in
spection legulations apply only
to psoducts loi intei state tiade
On Tuesday Febiuary 6, Presi
dent Johnson asked Congress
for a poultiy inspection law
similar to the one enacted foi
meat.
