Meat consumption and pro
duction reached record high
levels in 1967 and those peaks
are expected to be maintained
in 1968, Robert F. Gray, chair
man of the board of the Ameri
can Meat Institute, said in a
year-end statement today

Per capita consumption of
meat in 1967 rose to 176 6
pounds, four percent higher
than the 170 5 pounds per capi
ta consumed m 1966 and one
percent more than the previous
record of 174 5 pounds per capi
ta set in 1964

a record of 34 billion pounds am

over the total of 1966 and 13
billion pounds more than the
previous record high of 32 7 bil
lion pounds produced in 1964
Beef production in 1967, a
new record, was 201 ibillvon
pounds, up two percent from
the previous high of 197 billion
pounds in 1966 Pork produc
tion jumped 11 percent from
113 billion pounds in 1966 to
12 5 billion pounds in 1967 Veal
product non was 800 million
pound's and lamb production
was 600 million pounds in 1967,
both down 100 million pounds
from a year earlier.
Gray said that all indications
point to continuing high levels
of production and consumption
for 1968. Both beef and pork
production are expected to rise
slightly, but this will be offset
by corresponding decreases in
veal and lamb consumption and
production
“Now that the population of
the United States has passed
200 million,” Gray said, “it re
flects great credit on the meat
and livestock industry to have
met the continually increasing
