Taking an average from five test locations Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsyl vania and Texas the results gave Lenape a clear lead in spe cific gravity over the other two varieties, while its mean yield per acre ran slightly under Ken nebec’s and considerably higher than Eetahdin’s. The Lenape was developed from a cross of two USDA seed lings,' 41756 and 83672-3. The first true seed was grown in 1959 under pedigree number 85141-6 at the Crops Research Division of the Agricultural ‘Re search Service at Bettsville, MdT In addition to the Wise Potato Chip Co., many State Experi ment Stations cooperated with the USDA and ‘the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Sta tion in its selection and devel opment. Among the scientists mainly responsible for the suc cess of the new variety are Or. R. V. Akeley, potato investiga tion leader at ‘the USDA facil ity at Beltsville, and Dr. W. R Mills, professor of plant path ology at Penn State University. Foundation seed ot the Len ope potato is now being produc ed (by the State Seed Potato Board of Maine.
