Simulated Milk
Products Being
Investigated
The Penna. Department of
Agriculture has started an in
vestigation of simulated milk
products that are being pro
cessed and! marketed in several
sections of the state.
They are similar to products
recently introduced in other
states, particularly California
and New York, according to
State Agriculture Secretary Ire
land H. Bull,
The products, known else
where as “imitation milk,” or
“milk substitutes,” generally
contain vegetable fats, Secre
tary Bull said. Some, he added,
also contain powdered skim
milk.
“I have instructed state food
agents and milk sanitarians to
obtain samples of such prod
ucts being sold in Pennsylvania
so that we can determine what
ingredients are being used in
their preparation,” Secretary
Bull said.
“Our first concern is to pro
tect the public by making sure
all ingredients in these prod
ucts meet approved standards
and are fit for human consump
tion.”
Secretary Bull said, his of
fice has received numerous re
ports about these products.
These include inquiries from
food processors and dairy op
erators concerning regulations
—such as licensing, registra
tion, labeling and packaging'—
that apply to the manufacture
and sale of these products.
“Examination of the prod
ucts to identify ingredients,
their accurate labeling, and
whether they are of a quality
suitable for human consump
tion will help us determine
the answers to these ques
tions,” Secretary Bull explain
ed. He said also he will con
fer with the Attorney General’s
office regarding regulations and
procedures that may apply to
the manufacture and sale of
the new products in Pennsyl
vania.
