PSU Specialist
Gives Dairy Cow
Breeding Rules
Harvey Shaffer, dairy exten
sion specialist from Penn State,
told 45 farmers gathered at the
Spanish Restaurant in Quarry
ville Thursday evening, that
many dairymen have been
breeding their cows to early in
the heat period
“The most important single
thing in breeding the cow is
timing,” he said “All you need
to worry about is to get the live
egg and the healthy sperm to
gether. To do this we need to
breed the cows later than many
of us have been.”
Shaffer suggested the best
time is from middle to end of
standing heat and as much as
six hours after. “Don’t be afraid
of late breeding,” he said. “You
can’t fertilize the egg before it
is produced.”
