• Shooting Hours
(Continued from Page 13)
be no hunting of any kind be
fore 9 a.m. EDST; and the
spring gobbler season. May ti
ll, 1968, when turkeys may be
hunted from one-half hour be
fore sunrise until 10 a.m„
EDST.
Shooting hours for each day
of the year and an explana
tion on how to use the time
tables and map are published
in the Hunting Digest which
is issued with each hunting li
cense sold. The Digest is also
available from Game Commis
sion Field Division Offices.
.Some questions have been
raised by sportsmen concern
ing enforcement of the new
shooting hours, and the Game
Commission this week further
emphasized some of the rea
sons for this change.
The primary reason was to
avoid confusion and make it
more convenient for the hunt
er who may be pursuing sev
eral species in a single hunt,
such as woodcock, grouse, wa
terfowl or squirrels. The hours
will be uniform for all game
species, with the only excep
tions these noted above.
In the past, on a given day
there could have been as many
as four different times to start
shooting, depending on the
species hunted, and as many
quitting times. The new hours
should eliminate the confus
sion of the past.
Shooting hours were origin
ally instituted as a safety meas
ure. They are still just that.
They are primarily intended
to prevent a hunter from
shooting when light is insuf
ficient to clearly distinguish or
identify his target. Too, the
hunter should have adequate
time prior to darkness to re
cover game taken late in the
iay.
Finally, the new shooting
hours are not complicated or
difficult to understand. The
sun rises and sets, and day
light begins and ends 20 min
utes later in Pittsburgh than
in Philadelphia These hours
merely place hunting on the
basis of the movement of the
sun instead of arbitrary times,
without regard to the sun,
which have not proved entire
ly satisfactory. This is the
same basis for hunting hours
that has been used for water
fowl for years, and duck and
geese hunters haven’t had much
trouble understanding the set
up.
Th e times of sunrise and
sunset vary from day to day

and area to area across the
state. Shooting hours (one
half hour BEFORE sunrise to
sunset) are listed in the Hunt
ing Digest, and a meridian map
in the Digest shows how many
minutes to add west of the
75th meridian to the times
listed to determine the shoot
ing hours for any location in
the state. It’s that simple.
The new shooting hours set
up and meridian maps aren’t,
and are not intended to be,
precise to the second. Nor is
the new program designed to
trap the unwary hunter and
increase the number of ar
rests for early or late shoot
ing. Reasonableness and good
judgment on the part of the
hunter, and officers whose duty
it is to enforce the Game Laws,
will be expected by the Game
Commission.

“Take the field of research
alone.” he said. “Federal, state

27.000 scientists. We estimate
that to meet the research goals
we have set will require am ad

13.000 more by 1977. These
are exciting, pioneering, crea

And, he said, in this and
many other agricultural fields,
jobs are going begging. He no

“Food comes first," he said.
“There can be no secure peace
