1967 Fly Control
Practices Noted
The 1967 recommendations
for dairy cattle fly control re
main unchanged from those
released in 1966 by entomolog
ists at the University of Dela
ware.
A variety of materials and
products on the approved list
piovides dairymen with an ef
fective solution to the fly con
troy problem, according to a
University Leaflet. Before us
ing any of these materials, read
the directions on the label and
use them accordingly, they ad
vise.
In addition to chemical con
trols, sanitation is necessary for
effective fly control. Remov
ing and spreading wet bedding
and manure frequently will
help reduce the fly problem.
All manure handling equip
ment should be cleaned and
sprayed 'after it is used.
The authors of the leaflet ad
vise that dairymen check the
recommendations to be certain
they are complying with re
strictions established by federal
agencies. Copies of the leaflet
“1966 Recommendations for
Dairy Cattle Fly Control” are

• Brucellosis
(Continued from Page 1)
“New development control
programs,” he pointed out,
“could result in all the north
eastern states from Virginia
to New England being bru
cellosis free by 1971, or soon
er.”
The first step, he said, is to
lower the minimum age for
vaccinating calves from four
months to three months to con
form with changes made re
cently by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.
BRUSELLOSIS CONTROL . .
Research, he said, has shown
that calves vaccinated with
Strain-19 vaccine at a younger
age have just as good immun
ity as when vaccinated at an
older age. At the same time.
Bull said, problems caused by
retained antibodies from the
vaccine are greatly reduced.
Secretary Bull said the fol
lowing changes are being made
in brucellosis control regula
tions as a result of the lower
vaccination age -
Effective September 1, 1967,
the age for official vaccination
of female cattle in Pennsylva
nia will be changed from four
through eight months to three
through six months.
Beginning January 1, 1968,
all vaccinated female cattle
over 24 months of age import
ed into the Commonwealth
except for immediate slaughter
—must be tested for brucel
losis with negative results.
Beginning January 1, 1969,
all vaccinated female cattle
over 18 months of age must be
negative to brucellosis blood
tests in order to qualify for
Pennsylvania livestock health
certificates. Health certificates
are required for intra-state
shipments of cattle and for
shipments of cattle into Penn
sylvania.
