Cause Of Low Grass
Digestibility
Low digestibility that can oc
cur in certain grasses like
reed canary grass, coastal ber
mudagrass, and tall fescue
is caused by their relatively
high silica content, a U.S. De
partment of Agriculture scient
ist reported.
Silica is a flinty compound
that forms the basic structure
of sand. Nutritionists have been
aware that cattle feeds contains
silica, but they have generally
thought it to be soil contamina
tion.
Dr. Peter J. Van Soest, a nu
tritionist in Agricultural Re
search Service, told the annual
meeting of the American Dairy
Science Association at Ithaca,
N Y„ that grasses actually meta
bolize silica and incorporate it
into cell walls. Legumes, by
contract, do not take up silica.
Statistical studies by Van
Soest showed that the indigesti
bility of grasses, unexplained by
known factors (such as lignin
content), was closely related to
silica content Studies with arti
ficial rumens showed that when
silica is chemically removed,
the digestibility of grasses im
proves.
Silica interferes with the di
gestibility of other grass com
ponents For every additional
unit of silica a grass contains,
digestibility decreases three
times. This may come about,
Van Soest thinks, because silica
inhibits the digestion of cellu-

lose by rumen microbes.
Van Socst’s findings will help
farmers by making more ac
curate evaluation of the nutri
tive content of grasses; the ex
tra laboratory work involved is
small. It is also possible that
plant breeders may be able to
develop new breeds of grasses
that do not accumulate silica.
