Summer Job Tax
Questions Raised
Income tax and social secur
ity for part-time and summer
employees raise many questions
for teenagers taking their first
job.
Some teenagers will be work
ing for their parents on the
farm while others will work
for outside employers. Social
security coverage differs if
teenagers are working for their
parents, but income tax re
quirements are similar no mat
ter who the employer is, ac
cording to W. T. McAllister,
extension farm management
specialist at the University of
Delaware.
Usually an outside employer
will require that new employ
ees apply for a social security
number if they don’t already
have one.
Social security tax, at the
rate of 4.4 percent, will be de
ducted from the employee’s
pay check. As a general rule,
a teenager working for his par
ents does not qualify for social
security; no payments are
withheld from his wages and
no retirement benefits are
earned.
Federal income tax is due
only on income in excess of
$6OO per year However, in
come tax is usually withheld
starting with the first pay
check If the teenager receives
less than $6OO income during
the year, the withheld money
will be refunded if he files a
tax return. Of course, if he
earns more than $6OO, he is re
quired to file a return
McAllister emphasizes that
parents still have the right to
claim children as exemptions

MEMBER FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION

on their tax returns as long as
the child is under the age of
19 or is a full-time student
with his parents providing
more than half his support.
Unless wages were actually
paid to the parents rather than
to the child, parents should not
include income earned by the
child as part of the parent’s
taxable income.
It’s a good idea for parents
to make payment by check at
the time the work is done when
they’re paying children for do
ing farm work. The check
serves as proof that payment
was actually made, and par
ents can use it as a legitimate
farm expense for tax purposes,
McAllister points out. For this
reason, it’s wise to give chil
dren money for farm woik
rather than giving them a calf,
automobile or free gasoline
